The General aspect  :

 Dog of average size, active, compact, with the short, inscribable kidney in a square. The wrinkles of cranium, the folds on the level of the garrot, its small ears and its muzzle, which points out that of the hippopotamus, confer a single aspect to him. The males are larger and more powerful than the females

  

The head and the cranium :

 Head: rather large compared to the body, the wrinkles on the face and the cheeks are prologent to form the pennon.

Cranium : dish, broad.

The truffle :

 Large and broad, preferably black, but any color corresponding to the general color of dress is allowed. The nostrils are largely open.

The eyes :

 Dark, out of almond, with the renfrognée expression. The iris of a clearer color is tolerated in the dogs with the diluted dress. The function of the ocular sphere and the eyelids should not in no case to be obstructed by the skin, the folds or the hairs which surround them. Any sign of ignition of the sphere occulaire, conjunctive or the eyelids is to be proscribed. No the entropion.

The ears :

 Very small, rather thick, in the shape of equilateral triangle, slightly round at the end, they are attached very high with the end folded up in the direction of the eye. They are well placed ahead above the eyes, spaced well and fall actually applied against cranium. The drawn up ear is a serious defect. (cf heading "health").

The neck :

 Extremely, average length, grafted well on the shoulders. The loose skin of the neck should not be excessively developed.

The mouth and teeth :

 The language, the palate, the gums and the chops are preferably of a bluish black. The stained language of pink is tolerated, the entirely pink language is completely undesirable. In the dogs with diluted dress, the language is entirely of color lavender. Jaws strong presenting one articulated out of scissors perfect, the upper incisors cover the lower in a close contact and are established of square compared to the jaws.

The former part :

 The forelimbs are right, moderate length and are equipped with a good framework. Their skin is not folded.

Shoulders: Muscular, attached well and oblique.

Metacarpus: Slightly tilted, extremely and flexible.

The trunk :

 In the adult dogs, the cutaneous folds on the body are undesirable except with the garrot and the base of the tail, where there are folds of average importance.

Line of the top : It plunges slightly behind the garrot to be raised slightly on the kidney.

Back : Short, solid.

Kidney : Short, broad, slightly vaulted.

Croup : Rather punt. Chest: Broad and gone down well, the area sternale reaches the level of the elbows.

Chest : Broad and gone down well, the area sternale reaches the level of the elbows.

Line of the lower part : It goes up slightly towards the side.

The posterior part :

 The rear limbs muscular, solid are moderately angled, of balance compared to the ground. Seen of behind the posterior ones are parallel. Folds on the thigh, the leg and the métatarse just like a thickening of the skin on the level of the bulge are undesirable.

Bulge : Gone down well.

The feet :

 Of moderated size, compact, nonsagging. The fingers are equipped with good joints. There are no pins with the posterior ones.

The tail :

 Thick and round with its root, it is reduced at a peak fine. The tail is attached trs, milked high characteristic of the race. It can be carried high and curved, rolled up in loop tight or bent above or on one on the side of the back. The abscence of tail or curtailed tail are to be proscribed.

The dress :

 Two kinds of dress :

  -     the horse coat : with the extremely short hair and pricking the such hair of the horse (from where its name).

   -    the brush coat : with the hair slightly longer but always hirsute and thorn-bush.

 It is a characteristic of the race: the hair short, hard and is roughcast. The hair is right and isolated on the body, in general more lying on the members. There is no undercoat. The length of the hair can vary from 1 to 2,5 cm. It is never to wash.

The weight and measurements :

 As in much of another race, the male is slightly taller than the female, it is also heavier and more solid. One and the other will have however to be well proportioned. As an indication, its size varies between 44 and 51 cm (17,5 to 20 inches) with the garrot and its weight between 20 and 25 kilos. "minipeis" are being studied in the United States which should be located between 20 and 30cm, they will however not be accepted by the FCI (Federation Cynologique Internationale).

The color :

 All the colors plain are accepted except the white. Often, the hair of the tail and the posterior area of the thighs is of a clearer nuance. A tone more ombré along the back and on the ears is tolerated. A Club in the United States is occupied of the subjects with mixed dress in order to make recognize this variety officially. It should be noted that the "black and white" subjects are always strongest and most beautiful of a range but the official Standard does not admit them.

The movements :

 The preferred pace is trot. The movement is released, balanced and energetic with a good extension of former and a strong push of the posterior ones. The feet tend to converge towards the central axis when speed increases. The sheathed step is a defect.
